Position: Care / Support Worker
Accountable to: Team Manager
Responsible to: Registered Manager
Location: Birmingham / Erdington

Summary of the role

To provide care and support to individuals, within their own home or the community in which they live.

You will be expected to perform a variety of tasks, according to individual needs assessment. These will be set out clearly in an outcome based Person Centred Plan which will be made available for you to read each time you visit the person.

You will receive appropriate training, including induction, shadowing and mentoring from an experienced Health and Social Care Worker or Team Leader, before being expected to work alone.

Whilst undertaking any tasks we will expect you to encourage the persons’ independence and adhere to their intrinsic rights as a full member of society.

The tasks you will be asked to undertake

(this list is not exhaustive, please refer to care worker’s role)

1. Personal care

  • Washing/bathing/showering a person’s body and hair
  • Mouth care such as the cleaning of dentures and teeth
  • Dressing
  • Toileting which may include changing continence pads and dealing with catheter and stoma bags
  • Helping them to eat and drink
  • Helping them with their personal appearance
  • Prompting or administering their medication
  • Meal preparation
  • Emptying commodes and urine bottles

2. Domestic care

  • Laundry
  • Cleanliness of the house such as washing up, hovering, dusting, cleaning bathrooms and kitchens
  • Generally making sure service users are comfortable and warm

3. Social care

  • Collecting pensions and prescriptions
  • Shopping
  • Talking and listening
  • Escort Duties
  • Sitting Services
  • Activities such as reminiscence, dominoes, reading letters etc
  • Assist service users to participate in cultural and religious activities

4. Support duties

  • Organise appointments to doctors, dentists, opticians etc
  • Ensure access to the wider community and maintain links with family and friends
  • Participate in social functions in the community e.g. Day Care, Library visits
  • Offer assistance with access to and understanding of benefits

5. Health and therapeutic care

You may sometimes be asked from time to time to provide basic tasks in these areas, but only with guidance and supervision of an appropriate professional.

Essential requirments

  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to be flexible in approach to caring and supporting vulnerable adults within the community
  • Ability to respect confidentiality
  • Basic verbal, numeracy and written skills
  • Positive attitude to health and safety
  • Understanding that you must respect the fact that you are working in another person’s home
  • Understanding of equality and diversity
  • Willingness to assist people with basic health care
  • Understand the nature of Domiciliary Care
  • Positive attitude to own health and work attendance
  • Willingness to work within the service’s Aims, Objectives and Codes of Practice
  • Willingness to provide personal care (i.e. bathing, washing, toileting) with dignity and respect
  • Willingness to assist in social inclusion in the wider community
  • Willingness to attend staff meetings as required.
  • Ability to maintain household cleanliness and hygiene
  • Attentiveness to own personal hygiene
  • Willingness to undertake training and development up to NVQ Level 2

Desirable attributes

  • Interest in developing a caring and supporting role
  • Ability to speak other languages such as Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi
  • Experience of working within a caring role
  • Use of phone
  • Car driver and access to car
